Passion for creation

Over the years, Sonia has explored many techniques and mediums, but it is with graphite pencil that she finds her preferred means of expression.

In her studio, she embarks on a long creative process where her observations take shape through meticulously crafted drawings. Gradually, black unfolds into an infinite array of shades, revealing shapes, textures, and plays of light.

Biography

A resident of Les Cèdres, Quebec, Sonia Isabelle holds a diploma in Visual Arts from Cégep de Valleyfield and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with majors in graphic design and illustration from Concordia University, as well as a specialization in cultural mediation.

An award-winning artist, her work is featured in regional, national, and international exhibitions.

Her work can be found in various public, corporate and private collections.

Approach

I'm fascinated by people. My aim is to reproduce, with authenticity, moments of everyday life captured on film. Beyond simple representation, I strive to bring out the emotion emanating from my protagonist.

Inspired by the work of twentieth-century street photographers such as Sabine Weiss and Vivian Maier, in my work I seek to deliver a sensitive and honest visual testimony to my times and to the relationship between humans and their environment.

With my cell phone, I capture scenes that catch my attention and serve as the basis for my creative process. Inspired by these photos taken spontaneously as I anonymously rub shoulders with my subject in their living environment, I seek to highlight themes that reflect the reality of my time.
