Growing up in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, one of the shops you couldn't miss was Maison Besner. Located downtown, this institution offered everything from toys to lighting fixtures.
While today I appreciate the architecture of this building, which apparently housed the old fire station, I don't have very fond memories of this place.
Let me explain! When I was very young, I went to see Santa Claus in the part of the building facing Ste-Cécile Street.
After waiting a little too long for my patience, which was proportional to my height, I was invited to approach the old man with the white beard. "What would you like me to bring you for Christmas?
I don't really remember what I said, but I have a very clear memory of what Santa gave me...A candy cane.
Some kids got a present to tide them over until Christmas and I got...a candy cane. Try explaining that to your child!
Father Besner had found a way to make Santa's visit worthwhile by selling parents an additional gift to give to the children, who were amazed by the old bearded man's generosity.
My parents, who probably disapproved of this practice, hadn't bought a toy for me, and I left in disbelief with my rather bitter-tasting candy cane.
