When I was little, my father worked hard to build us a slide so we could have fun. It must have been 15 feet high and 40 feet long. At least, that's how I remember it.
A few years ago, my mother gave me some family photos. My memory melted like snow in the sun when I saw a photo of my father and me ready to slide down THE MOUNTAIN! Still, it's a nice memory.
When I saw these young day-care children, their play took me back in time. These children, if they remember anything at all, will certainly remember this slide when they talk about their “mountain”!
As I write these lines, I realize what a great responsibility we have as parents for our children's memories. Childhood memories color all our lives. The loving gestures we make for them, the time we spend listening to their confidences, the little attentions we dispense on important days for them. “We make memories for later”, I used to say... and I had no idea that “later” would come so quickly.
